Feature Film Screenwriter

Project: The Night Before
Starring: Keanu Reeves
Credit: Screenplay and Story
Distribution: Theatrical, DVD, cable
Synopsis: On the morning following prom night, Winston Bellerpop wakes in the ghettos of East Los Angeles to find that he sold his prom date into prostitution in a drunken haze. His efforts to secure her safety lead him on a journey of self-exploration that will turn him into the man he always wanted to be.
Interesting Notes: This project was based on a true story. Though the film's author never actually sold his prom date to a pimp, he has been responsible for errors in judgement every now and then.

Project: The Spuds MacKenzie Movie
Credit: Story
Production Entity: Universal Pictures
Interesting Notes: For those old enough to remember the ill-advised ad campaign for Bud Light, it's unlikely that you were aware Universal had a feature film in the works. Mr. Scherick was hired to write the script, concocting death defying situations for our hirsuit hero Spuds, who was relentlessly pursuied by an evil arch-nemesis dog catcher. Don't look for this one on DVD.

Project: Women on Wheels
Production Entity: Warner Brothers, Village Road Show
Interesting Notes: I collaborated briefly with a dear friend and very talented writer-director on this screenplay, which ultimately laguished in the dreaded tinsle-town purgatory, where so many worthwhile projects wind up spending an eternity being rewritten over and over again.

Project: Oh, Brother
Credit: Screenplay
Production Entity: 20th Century Fox
Interesting Notes: This screenplay -- a John Hughes-style youth film -- was one of the first the Mr. Scherick was hired to write for a studio.
Synopsis: A high-school nerd and beauty queen become instant brother and sister when their parents marry. When they fall in love, societal morays must be re-examined and the walls of high-school elitism come tumbling down.

Project: Various Hollywood Screenplays
Credit: None - it's a secret!
Production Entity: Un-named Movie Studios
Duties: Mr. Scherick has seved as ghost writer and story analyst for top-level Hollywood screenwriters who have sworn him to secrecy. He has been engaged by both screenwriters and pretigious independent production companies alike to use his gifts for facilitating the creative process, maximizing the effectiveness of their scripts and productions.

Film & Television Editor

Project: Melrose Place
Credit: Film Editor
Production Entity: Fox Television
Interesting Notes: While Mr. Scherick was working on the show, his ex-girlfriend was cast in a recurring role. She holds the dubious disticntion of being the only actor ever that was made to reshoot a scene for an Aaron Spelling production because of bad acting. Mr. Scherick took glee at this humiliating embarrassment.

Project: The Last Resort
Starring: Charles Grodin
Credit: Film Editor
Production Entity: Roger Corman Pictures
Distribution: Theatrical, DVD, Cable
Interesting Notes: During his stint as film editor on the production, Mr. Scherick learned first hand why nobody works for Roger Corman more than once.

Project: Protocol
Starring: Goldie Hawn
Credit: Assistant Film Editor
Production Entity: Paramount Pictures
Distribution: Theatrical, DVD, Cable
Interesting Notes: It was during the editing of this film that Mr. Scherick's professional writer-for-hire career began when Academy Award winning director Herbert Ross asked him to write scenes for Goldie Hawn that were later shot and added to the film in post production.

Project: Footloose
Starring: Kevin Bacon
Credit: Apprentice Film Editor
Production Entity: Paramount Pictures
Distribution: Theatrical, DVD, Cable
Interesting Notes: After being teased relentlessly by giant movie producers for the torn-up sneakers he wore to work, Mr. Scherick was approached by the director and asked if they could be featured in the opening credits of the film. They were. Mr. Scherick's ratty sneakers -- and his gift of dance -- both appear under the director's credit at the finale to the lively sequence opening this now-classic film.
