Uncompromising Film
The International Scherick team has recently executive produced the feature film GI Jesus
which won the Grand Prize at Palm Casino's Las Vegas film festival for its uncompromising portrayal of a Mexican national fighting
for America in the Iraqi conflict.
Here's what Variety said:
"An ambitious, topical satire that takes a harrowing and humorous look at a Mexican national's brief furlough from the frontlines --
a hyperreal quality, suggesting a perilously thin line between the truth and one's worst nightmares. Admirable energy and audacity,
alternately ironic and wistful... always intriguing."
The Benefit of Bold Cinema
The conditions surrounding the making of GI Jesus were unusual to say the least. Rare is it when
a courageous and timely story is able to be told without interference. Gregory Scherick was brought
in by long-time collegue and partner, Matthew Devlen, to work closely with seminal independent production company
Cineville to oversee the process of getting the script up to its full dramatic potential. He then remained on the production
to work with the actors and film's director, maximizing creative output.
Cineville is widely respected as one of the few hold-outs in the indy world that is willing to tackle difficult subject matter that major studies would balk at. It's known for such independent classics as Swimming With Sharks and Gas, Food, and Lodging.
GI Jesus was able to achieve the level of critical praise it did because it was not dependent on the ultimate approval of studio executives who often make decisions designed to minimize risk, rather than tell stories that society needs to hear -- ones that raise difficult questions and challenge prevailing moreys, like GI Jesus so boldly does.
